Silkworms!

Thursday, October 28, 2010

Today some of my silkworm eggs have finally hatched! I have about 20 little, bitty silkworm babies! I am feeding them cherry plum tree leaves instead of the recommended mulberry tree leaves because I don't have access to a mulberry tree. I think they are eating the leaves I gave them. Fingers crossed that they do. If they won't, then I will have to pay money and have some 'silkworm chow' delivered, which I do not want to do.

My goal is to supply myself with enough of my own homegrown silk to spin and then of course to knit or crochet. It's all a very exciting experiment.

Hi Paula, perhaps you could put an ad at your local shop or library or get on line to see if there is any one that is happy to part with their mulberry tree leaves or grow some mulberry trees if we lived close you could have some of my mulberry leaves put a thread on SS and ask for any one in the area that has mulberry leaves to give you . I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product I hope it works...how long does it take .

Thanks Sherrie, but I have already asked around. I started asking a few weeks ago. Will see how it all goes. They are not moving much at the moment. I'm hoping that is because it's not as warm and their bellies are full. :-) I'll know in the morning if the leaves I gave them will be ok or not.
